Lighting is one of the easiest ways to make a space come alive! It can make a room feel warm, inviting, and uplifting. As I shared in my kitchen renovation post, I spent weeks deliberating over the kitchen pendant lighting to hang over the island. It felt like such a huge decision, because I knew whatever I chose for this spot would set the tone for our entire kitchen/hearth room/breakfast nook area.

Some days I leaned toward a coastal look, other days I wanted a more classic/traditional feeling, and at other times I wanted a more modern vibe.  The one thing I knew for sure was that I wanted our kitchen to feel open, warm and welcoming—and I knew the right  lighting would help us achieve that feeling.

I’ve always loved the look of double pendants, like the brass light fixtures featured in this lovely kitchen by Andrea McQueen Design:

I also love the beautiful glass and brass pendant lights (here’s another source) in the modern coastal style kitchen below from Pure Salt Interiors. I love those woven counter stools, too!

In our kitchen, since we only have one electrical box above the island, I decided to go with something linear so we wouldn’t have to hire an electrician to come in and add extra boxes.  So when I found the 3-light fixture shown in our kitchen, below, I knew it was the right choice.  The crisp brass and white, modern look, classic shape, and price checked off all my boxes!

Since I found so many beautiful options for kitchen pendant lighting during my search, I thought I’d share several of my favorites in different silhouettes, shapes, materials, and price points.  I hope this collection will give you some inspiration — and perhaps make your lighting decision a little easier than mine!

But first–here are a few tips on how to choose the best kitchen lighting and how to hang kitchen pendant lighting over an island:

–If you live in a home where the kitchen, family room, and breakfast nook all meet–like ours do–you might want to choose smaller pendants so they won’t distract from the view of the other areas. Clear glass pendants often work well in this type of space, too, because they don’t disrupt your line of sight.

–If your kitchen is pretty simple and needs a bit of a “wow factor,” it’s fun to choose lighting that will make a statement. However, if your kitchen already has a busy design going on, like a patterned backsplash, wallpaper, or lots of shapes and textures, you might want to choose something more subtle and airy-looking.

–When you’re hanging pendant lights over a kitchen island, allow 30-32″ from the top of the counter to the bottom of the light fixture. Our pendants came with several cord cover rods for different hanging heights, and with our 10′ ceiling they ended up hanging 29″ from the top of the counter, which I figured was close enough!
