I’ve been on the hunt for a modern new coffee table for our living room for so long!  At one point, I thought I found the perfect one and ordered it online, but when it arrived the finish was copper instead of gold/brass.  I thought about keeping it and painting the base but ultimately decided to return it.  So the search is still on!

A coffee table can make or break a living room, which is why I’m taking my time in deciding. My musts include: 1) a pretty yet durable surface; 2) the right shape and size for our space; and 3) a modern yet adaptable style–so it will look good no matter where my decorating whims may take me!  My problem isn’t that I can’t find anything I like–I’m actually finding too many tables I like! Right now, I’m loving something with a marble top, like the one in the photo below. Isn’t it a beauty?

A few tips regarding coffee tables–

How to choose a coffee table

When choosing a coffee table, remember to take into account its style, shape and size, as well as its function.  Are you going to use it as a footrest? A dining table? A place to play games or do puzzles? I know it’s tempting to just choose whatever catches your eye, but a little forethought will help you not only pick one you love, but one that meets your family’s needs and lifestyle, too.

How far should a coffee table be from the couch or sofa?

Allow around 18 inches between the coffee table and the sofa edge to provide enough leg room but still be able to set down drinks without straining. Coffee table heights vary, but a good rule of thumb is to keep the coffee table height and sofa or chair seat height within 4 inches of each other.

What size should a coffee table be?

The perfect length is about two-thirds the length of the couch. For example, if your sofa is 6 feet long, you will want to buy a coffee table that’s about 4 feet long.

What shape should my coffee table be?

The most popular shape, rectangular tables, work well in front of a sofa.  An oval shape table often works well for smaller rooms. Square or round coffee tables work best for large seating configurations, such as a living room with a sectional or a large sofa and love seat combination.
