Expressing Your Own Style in Your Home
Hi, friends! A few days ago I shared this quote with you:
“The rule of ‘no risk, no reward’ is especially true when it comes to renovating. Most of us can’t close our eyes and imagine the end result, or know for sure that our ideas will work. But if the impulse for change is strong enough, you take the leap! How else will you get the rooms you want?”
It’s amazing how powerful words can be. Just reading that quote was enough to give me the courage to go forward with our panel molding project, and I’m so glad we did! By allowing myself to fearlessly express my personal style in our home, I opened the door to more courage and creativity in my life as a whole.
Since then, I’ve thought a lot about what it means to be fearless in home design and decorating. And I think what it means is being true to who you are, no matter what’s trending.
It’s so easy to get distracted by what others are doing and saying. But I know I’m happiest when I’m decorating my home to express my own personal taste and style. It’s easier to just be you and decorate in a way that makes you feel best, rather than trying to copy what others are doing.
Decorating your home should be fun! I strongly believe that our homes should inspire us and reflect who we are right now.
If you look at my home today, with its white walls and neutral furniture, you might be surprised to know that in our last house, I painted the walls just about every color imaginable (thanks to 90’s design guru, Christopher Lowell)!
Our family room was painted a deep magenta. Our bedroom was a mauve-y pink (my poor husband)! Our living room was sunny yellow. And the guest bathroom was what some people might call neon green. I encouraged my daughters to express their creativity through decorating, too, so the walls in their bedrooms were a rotating rainbow of colors—sometimes orange, sometimes purple … or red … or pink … or green.
And although nowadays my style is a bit more subdued, it still reflects who I am right now. This is a calmer, more restful time of life for me, and my home is a mirror of that.
When it comes to my own personal home style, I love incorporating trends and statement pieces into my home, but I like to tame bold prints and vibrant colors with classic tailored pieces for a look that expresses my personality. In fact, that’s how I dress, too! Most days I wear blue or white jeans and a white or blue shirt, and perk things up with leopard-print shoes or a colorful scarf.
Since I love creating a different look and vibe in each room in my home, I look for things that tie my look together from room to room. Right now, I’m using navy accents in different ways throughout my home. I also like to use plants, baskets, and natural items like stones and shells to create a feeling of cohesiveness.
What does being fearless in expressing your personal home style mean for you?
For some, it might mean stepping out of the neutrals box by using more color. For others, it could mean combining styles and prints for an eclectic mix.
Don’t be shy about mixing different styles together. In fact, try not to think of your home style in terms of rigid labels like coastal, boho, farmhouse or traditional–rather, think of it in terms of what speaks to you.
By trying to fit into a certain design style, you limit your creativity. Every day, you wake up a brand new person. Everything that happened the day before changed you a little bit. That’s why it’s important to let your home style grow and change right along with you. I know that when I don’t let my style evolve, it leaves me feeling stuck and unmotivated.
Allow yourself to express your mood and personal home style in your home on a day-to-day basis. And when you find a look you love, don’t let anyone else talk you out of it.
If you want to try a new look in your home, go for it! You’ll never have the rooms you want until you’re willing to let go of what’s holding you back and just try it.
So be fearless. Take chances and let your creativity run wild. I love a home that’s unexpected and fearlessly tells the world, take it or leave it, this is who I am!
